The Seven Sayings of Christ

1. Traditional:

Luke 23:34  “Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do”(Ps.22:18)

2. Traditional:

Luke 23:43  “Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise.”

    Alternative:

Luke 23:43   “Verily I say unto thee this day with me shall thou be in                     Paradise”(Rotherham)

“I tell you truly, you will be in Paradise with me this very day.”                      (Moffat)

3. Traditional:

John 19:26-27  “Woman, behold thy son! …Behold thy mother!”

 4.Traditional:

Matthew 27:46: “My God! My God! Why hast thou forsaken Me?”

(Ps.22:1)

   Alternative:

Matthew 27:46  “My God! my God! For this I was spared!” (Lamsa)                              (Fenton)     “O My God! My God! To what have you abandoned Me?”

(Rotherham) My God! My God! To what end hast thou forsaken me?”

The Aramaic word that Jesus spoke was “shbakthani.” It is derived from shbak which means to: keep, reserve, spare, allow, permit and forgive. It is found in 1 Kings 19:18, Romans 11:4 as well as other places. The Aramaic word for “forsaken me” is different and is “taatani” which means to forsake or forget.

Would a loving Father forsake his only Son?…. Would you? Was not God aware of every sparrow that falls, every hair on your head? Is He not intimately involved with all creation?

 5. Traditional:            John 19:28   “I thirst.”(Ps.69:21)

Mark 15:23 states that it was wine mixed with myrrh. Matthew 27:34 states that it was wine mixed with gall. Some translations say vinegar, which is spoiled wine. The substance was given to lessen the pain of the crucifixion. Myrrh was given to Jesus when He was birthed (Matthew 2:11) and now when He leaves. Myrrh speaks of suffering in Scripture.

 6. Traditional:            John 19:30   It is finished.”

      Alternative:                              “It is fulfilled.” (Lamsa)

This is not a sighing statement by Christ. The Greek word for “finished” has within it the idea of  victory. It was victorious – the earth quaked, the sky turned black, a storm came up, eventually graves were opened.

 7. Traditional:    Luke 23:46  Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit:” (Ps.31:5)
