A Study on Worship Worship, the word, is first used in Genesis 18:2 and
translated as "bowed"
in the KJV but the first time it is used as the word
"worship" in the KJV is
found in Genesis 22:5. Genesis 18:2 And he lift up his eyes and looked, and, lo,
three men stood
by him: and when he saw them, he ran
to meet them from the tent door,
and bowed <07812> himself toward the ground Genesis 22:5: And Abraham said to his young men 'Stay
here with the donkey,
and I and the lad will go yonder; and we will worship and return unto you. Strong's Concordance word number 7812 shachah (shaw-khaw') - a
primitive root; verb translated as - worship 99, bow 31, bow down 18, obeisance 9,
reverence 5, fall down 3, themselves 2, stoop 1, crouch 1, miscellaneous
3;
172 times it means: to bow down, to depress, to bow down, prostrate
oneself
before superior in homage, before God in worship or before false gods or
before angel Psalm 22:27 All the ends of the world shall remember and turn
unto the LORD:
and all the kindreds of the nations shall worship before thee. Psalm 22:29 All they
that be fat upon earth shall eat and worship: all they that go
down to the dust shall bow before him: and none can keep alive his own soul. It is worthy to note that the Psalm of the cross, Psalm 22,
states that all the ends
of the earth will worship and bow down before God. Not one will be lost. As
the
shepherd has the 99, he goes and seeks the last one and saves it too. All
creation
will sing Hosanna. Psalm 81:9 There shall no strange god be in thee;
neither shalt thou worship
any strange god. There shall be no strange God in us, within our being, as He
has so graciously
saved us. He delivers, sanctifies, justifies, redeems and sets us in heavenly
places
with Him. What can we do, but worship? Psalm 95:6 O come, let us worship and bow down: let us
kneel before the
LORD our maker. In the New Testament, the word 'worship' first occurs in Matthew 2:2 Saying,
Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the
east,
and are come to worship him. Stron's concordance #4352 proskuneo (pros-koo-neh'-o)
from 4314 and
a probable derivative of 2965 (meaning
to kiss, like a dog licking his master's
hand); verb translated as
worship 60 times; 1) to kiss the hand to (towards)
one, in token of reverence 2) among the Orientals, esp. the Persians, to
fall
upon the knees and touch the ground with the forehead as an expression
of
profound reverence 3) in the NT by kneeling or prostration to do homage (to
one)
or make obeisance, whether in order to express respect or to make
supplication
used of homage shown to men and beings of superior rank or to the Jewish
high
priests or to God or to Christ or to heavenly beings or to demons Matthew 2:8-11 Wise men brought
gifts to worship Jesus. Matthew 4:9 Satan wants
the same worship The carnal mind, will, desires and emotions of the flesh, the
god of self, seeks the
same worship that should be given to God, the Creator. Beware the leaven of
the
Pharisees, that place worship as a church service, song singing, liturgy. For
those
things become the things worshipped and desired. The religious nature is
profane. Matthew 8:2, 9:18, 14:23, 15:25, 20:20, 28:9 All worshipped before Him before any request - recognizing
His Nature and their need. John 4:23-24 Worship in spirit and truth. There is worship only if you know Who He is and that your life is hid in Him. Revelation 4:10, 5:14 Jesus recognized His place before God.
He subjected Himself
to God. These living creatures (saints who know they live and move and have
their being
in Him) fell and worshipped before Him because they were in the same nature as
Jesus
as they stood in the presence of the Father. Rev. 22:9 Worship God and not man. Even an angel, a
divine messenger, a brother in
Christ who was both in this case recognizes that only God can be worshipped.
Even a
saint who knows that he or she is in the nature of God cannot take any glory of
his/her
position because of God Who gave him or her that standing. Our state of being is to be worship Romans 12:1 in the Amplified Bible states it is our'spiritual
worship' to be a living sacrifice. Romans 12:1 Strong's number 2999
latreia {lat-ri'-ah} • from 3000; translated as - service
4, divine service 1; the service of God Root
Strong's number 3000 ;.
latreuo {lat-ryoo'-o) translated
as: serve 16, worship 3,
do the service 1, worshipper 1; used 21 times. To serve, minister to, either to
the gods
or men and used alike of slaves and freemen, In the NT, to render religious
service or
homage, to worship or to perform sacred services, to offer gifts, to worship God
in the
observance of the rites instituted for his worship or of priests, to officiate,
to discharge the
sacred office. Worship is done out of spontaneity and not a code or law. It
is a harvest of the Spirit, a
result of a spiritual life, a fruit of a life that loves God not the flesh. Romans 8:11-13 Concordant Literal translation reads: "Now
if the Spirit of Him Who
rouses Jesusfrom among the dead is making its home in you, He who rouses
Christ Jesus
from among the dead will also be vivifying your mortal bodies because
of His Spirit making
its home in you"
Consequently, then, brethren, debtors are we, not to the flesh, to be
living in accord with the flesh, for if you are in accord with flesh, you are about to
be dying. Yet if,
in spirit you are putting the practices of the body to death, you will be
living. For whoever are
being led by God's Spirit, these are the sons of God. We are a living - Our body is 'vivified' or'quickened' -
sacrifice. Dead sacrifices no longer
work. Trying to please God or man by works, by self-efforts, by penance, seeking
affirmation
and approval of others for doing the right things, is a dead sacrifice. None of
these 'dead' things
are approved by God, but are acceptable by man. The one Who lives in us is Christ Jesus. We have been raised
with Him. We have set down in
heavenly places with Him. It is He who is a praise to God and our life is hid
with Christ in God.
What worship is there? What worship can there be? Only true worship. Worship is
Christ who
is our life. Charles
