The Shofar was a ram's horn, used to alert the people to an approaching enemy, the arrival of the feasts, the arrival of the year of Jubilee and other social and religious events in Israel. Yobel means "horn of a ram," and also signifies the Jubilee (Yobel-ee) year (every 50 years) in which all who had fallen into bondage were released.
